The Harden at the Public Market
The Public Market is a gem in Fort Worth’s historical crown. Designed by B. Gaylord Noftsger and developed by John J. Harden, it opened its doors on June 20, 1930. Despite its early success, the Great Depression brought struggles from which it could not recover. It eventually closed in 1941, making way for many other businesses to pass through before becoming vacant in 2002.
Named a Texas Historic Landmark in 1980 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the Fort Worth Public Market building was recognized for its significant role in Fort Worth’s commercial history and its unique Spanish Colonial Revival-style architectural design.
Wilks Development purchased The Fort Worth Public Market in 2015 as part of a dream to restore an important space that had been sitting vacant for over a decade and what Historic Fort Worth deemed an “endangered historical building.” Following years of research and studies, Wilks Development began the restoration process in June 2023. In addition to restoring the building, our team is also adding The Harden at the Public Market, a 62+ active senior community behind the building where the horse and cattle stalls once stood.
